Deeds not Words: Terry's Story

For Terry, a pre-9/11 Army veteran, an unexpected health challenge created a financial hardship that threatened his ability to keep up with basic household expenses.

Terry reached out to America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) seeking assistance with his rent and utility bills after undergoing heart surgery. The procedure required significant recovery time and temporarily prevented him from working and earning his regular income.

While Terry was focused on healing, the loss of income quickly created a difficult financial situation. He found himself struggling to cover two of his most essential expenses: his rent and electric bill.

Facing this difficult situation, Terry reached out for help rather than allowing the financial pressure to overwhelm him. An AWP Veteran Support Advocate listened to his circumstances, assessed his needs, and began looking for resources that could provide meaningful assistance while he recovered.

After reviewing Terry’s circumstances, PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words initiative stepped in to provide assistance covering two months of rent and electric bills.

The support came at a critical moment. Instead of worrying about whether he would be able to keep a roof over his head or maintain essential utilities while recovering from major surgery, Terry could focus on what mattered most: healing and getting back on his feet.

Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans when they need it most. Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Terry can access meaningful assistance through the AWP Network and focus on rebuilding, recovering, and moving forward.
