Deeds not Words: Derrick's Story

Derrick, a post-9/11 USMC and National Guard combat veteran, is a Native American from Arizona who was referred to the AWP Network after seeking assistance with a critical barrier to employment - the cost of essential tools needed for a new job.
After recently losing his job, Derrick quickly secured a new maintenance position at a local hospital. An important step toward rebuilding stability for his family.
Although he had successfully obtained the job, the position required him to provide his own tools, an unexpected expense he could not afford. With a family depending on him, securing this employment became essential.
Derrick had already taken proactive steps by seeking local support and receiving assistance from Goodwill, which helped him obtain interview clothing. However, no local resources were available to cover the cost of the required tools.
After being referred to the AWP Network by another veteran-serving organization, Derrick was approved for assistance through PureTalk’s “Deeds Not Words” initiative.
With this support, Derrick was able to begin his new job fully equipped and ready to work, removing a critical financial barrier and allowing him to move forward with confidence and independence in supporting his family.
Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans in need.
Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Derrick can access help through the AWP Network when they need it most.
