Deeds not Words: Jimmie's Story

After years of steady employment, Jimmie's family faced an unexpected crisis. His wife became seriously ill and required months of care. As Jimmie, a post-9/11 combat veteran who served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, focused on supporting her, he lost the job he had held for seven years. At the same time, his wife also lost her job of eight years due to her illness. Without either source of income, the family quickly fell behind on rent and faced the possibility of losing their home.

Understandably, Jimmie was extremely nervous when he reached out for help. Working alongside an AWP Veteran Support Advocate, he explored every available resource to stabilize his household. Unfortunately, several programs were unable to aid.

Despite these setbacks, the search for solutions continued.

Through PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words Program, Jimmie's rental arrears were resolved and outstanding issues with his landlord were addressed, providing immediate relief and stability for his family. The assistance helped ensure they could remain in their home as they got back on their feet.

Today, both Jimmie and his wife have secured full-time employment and are able to afford their rent moving forward. What once felt like an overwhelming situation has become a story of resilience, perseverance, and renewed hope.

Reflecting on the support he received, Jimmie shared:

"There is a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders now that I don't have to worry about my family being homeless."

For Jimmie, the assistance meant more than financial relief, it meant peace of mind, security for his loved ones, and the opportunity to focus on building a brighter future.
