Deeds not Words: Samuel's Story

2 min read

Samuel, a 58-year-old Air Force veteran and former firefighter, sustained a serious spinal injury after falling from a U.S. Air Force Fire Department ladder during a base exercise. Over time, the injury progressed into severe spinal stenosis, permanent neurological damage, and significant mobility limitations. Ultimately, his condition forced him to medically retire and dramatically changed his financial circumstances.

Samuel took the first steps toward stability by himself. He is connected to VA healthcare and other supportive services and is working through longer-term solutions. But those processes take time, while basic household expenses continue.

America’s Warrior Partnership connected Samuel with PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words initiative, which provided short-term financial assistance to help stabilize his household and relieve some of the immediate pressure.

Samuel shared:

“One year ago, I lost the ability to use my hands and arms due to severe cervical stenosis compressing my spinal column, and I had to medically retire since I am also unable to stand or walk very far. Without the help from America’s Warrior Partnership and PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words initiative, I would not be able to pay for basic household expenses, car insurance, food or utility bills. I cannot thank AWP and PureTalk enough for the hand up which will stabilize my life in ways I never knew was possible!”

This support does not solve every challenge Samuel faces, but it gives him something equally important: stability, reduced stress, and the breathing room to focus on his health and the longer-term path forward.

Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans in need. Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Samuel can access help through the AWP Network when they need it most.
