Deeds not Words: Eric's Story

For Eric, a pre-9/11 U.S. Navy veteran, the past several months brought a series of unexpected challenges that placed his health, finances, and housing stability at risk.

Eric was referred to AWP by The Headstrong Project after experiencing several difficult circumstances. He was hospitalized with health issues, and during the same period, his vehicle was totaled due to mechanical problems. After purchasing another vehicle, it later required towing, which created yet another financial burden.

At the same time, Eric experienced several losses within his family, including the loss of his niece’s father. Despite everything he was facing, Eric continued doing his best to support his niece while she attended school in the local area. His niece also provided caregiving support for Eric as he navigated his own health challenges.

After being released from the hospital, Eric returned home only to be served an eviction notice. With past-due rent and an outstanding electric bill, he faced the possibility of losing his home while still recovering and trying to manage the many challenges surrounding him.

Eric had already reached out to several local organizations for assistance but unfortunately, those resources lacked available funding at the time.

With his court date approaching, Eric needed immediate assistance to prevent eviction and maintain a safe and stable place to live.

Through advocacy and resource coordination, America’s Warrior Partnership connected Eric with Deeds Not Words, a collaborative initiative between AWP and PureTalk that provides critical support to veterans facing financial hardships.

The assistance helped address Eric’s housing needs and provided the stability he needed during an especially difficult chapter of his life.

Without this support, Eric would have faced eviction and the loss of his stable housing. Instead, through the combined efforts of veteran-serving organizations and community partners, he was able to remain in his home while continuing to focus on his health, his family, and moving forward.

Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans in need. Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Eric can access help through the AWP Network when they need it most.
