Deeds not Words: Joe's Story

For Joe, a Post-9/11 U.S. Air Force veteran, an unexpected employment transition created a financial gap that put his family’s housing stability at risk.
Joe served active duty in the United States Air Force from 2012 through 2016 before continuing his service in the Air Force Reserves in 2022. After completing his military service, Joe continued working to provide a stable future for his family in Virginia.
At the end of last year, Joe unexpectedly lost his employment. Determined to continue supporting his family, he relied on his personal savings and 401(k) while actively searching for new employment.
Joe eventually secured a new government position and began working at the end of 2026. While obtaining new employment was an important step toward long-term financial stability, the transition created a difficult short-term gap in income. Because of his employer’s monthly pay schedule, Joe would not receive his first paycheck until after his immediate housing deadline.
As a result, Joe was unable to meet his rent obligation, and his landlord-initiated eviction proceedings. The situation placed Joe, his spouse, and their three children at immediate risk of losing their housing.
Joe had already taken steps to resolve the situation himself. He actively sought employment, secured a new position, and had begun working. He also explored local resources for assistance, but his new income placed him above the eligibility limits for many programs, even though he had not yet received his first paycheck.
America’s Warrior Partnership worked to identify resources that could help Joe bridge this temporary financial gap and prevent his family from experiencing homelessness.
Recognizing Joe’s immediate needs, America’s Warrior Partnership connected him with PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words initiative. The initiative provided short-term financial assistance to help stabilize his household and ease some of the immediate financial pressure he was facing.
With this support, Joe was able to bridge the gap between starting his new job and receiving his first paycheck, helping his family remain safely housed during a difficult transition. What began as an unexpected setback became a reminder that, with the right support at the right time, veterans and their families can move forward with stability and hope.
Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans in need. Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Joe can access help through the AWP Network when they need it most.
