Deeds not Words: Denise's Story

As a post-9/11 retired Army veteran, Denise dedicated years of her life to serving her country. When difficult circumstances made it challenging to keep up with her rent, she found herself facing an uncertain housing situation for her and her two sons.

Facing financial hardship, Denise knew she needed assistance to prevent her circumstances from becoming an even greater obstacle for her family. Denise was referred to America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) by USA Cares after falling behind on her rent and accumulating rental arrears.

After reaching out to AWP, a Veteran Support Advocate immediately began working with Denise to understand her situation and identify resources that could help address her outstanding rent. Together, Denise and the advocate contacted numerous local and national organizations in search of assistance.

At the same time, Denise was working toward another important goal: relocating to an area where she could find better opportunities and build a stronger future for herself and her children. Securing stable housing was an essential part of making that transition possible.

Although the search for assistance presented challenges, Denise remained committed to finding a solution. She continued working alongside her advocate, following up with organizations and pursuing every available option.

The AWP advocate was able to connect Denise with PureTalk’s Deeds Not Words initiative. Through this partnership, Denise received assistance with her rental arrears, helping remove a major financial barrier standing between her family and stable housing.

The assistance provided Denise with the opportunity to move forward without the burden of past-due rent preventing her from securing a safe and stable home for her children.

For Denise and her two sons, this support represented more than financial assistance. It provided a fresh start, renewed stability, and the opportunity to focus on building a better future together.
