Deeds not Words: Charles' Story

Charles served as a pre-9/11 (1993-2000) Specialist in the U.S. Army, dedicating his time in uniform to service and commitment. After transitioning out of the military, he and his family faced overwhelming financial hardship that threatened their stability and future. Even while maintaining employment and doing everything possible to stay afloat, the burden became overwhelming and threatened the stability of the home he worked so hard to provide.

Through strong community collaboration, support arrived when it was needed most. The Virginia Department of Veteran Services helped address immediate needs, while America’s Warrior Partnership coordinated care to ensure every challenge was met with the right resources and guidance. Most importantly, mortgage assistance through PureTalk’s “Deeds Not Words” initiative provided the stability Charles and his family desperately needed to remain in their home and begin moving forward again.

Today, Charles is no longer standing in crisis; he is standing in gratitude, stability, and hope for the future. When he learned his home was secure, he shared these powerful words:

“My heart is overflowing with gratitude.”

Charles’ journey is a reminder that success is not measured by avoiding hardship, but by overcoming it with determination, support, and a community willing to stand beside those who served. This is what meaningful veteran support looks like: meeting veterans where they are, coordinating resources, and helping restore the foundation they need to rebuild and thrive.
