Available 24 hours a day, it connects veterans directly with trained responders who understand the unique challenges of military service and the struggles that can come after. Whether someone is facing a mental health crisis or simply does not know where to turn, 988 offers immediate, compassionate support.
For Scott, a disabled pre-9/11 Navy veteran who served from 1991 to 1993, that call made all the difference. Scott is vision impaired and facing a pending foot amputation due to serious health complications. On top of his medical struggles, he was falling behind on his utility bills and did not have the resources to purchase the personal hygiene products he needed to care for himself. The weight of it all left him unsure where to turn.

In a moment of need, Scott picked up the phone and called 988. The crisis line would later connect him with AWP, where we quickly stepped in to assess his situation and provide support. Through one of our community partners, On The Edge Foundation, Scott received $500 in assistance to cover his utility bills and purchase the hygiene products that were essential to his health and dignity.
For Scott, the support was more than financial relief. It was a reminder that he was not alone, that his service and sacrifice are not forgotten, and that when the challenges of life feel too heavy, there are people and organizations ready to stand by his side.
