Deeds Not Words: Monique’s Story

Life is full of transitionary periods with their own respective challenges, in this case: selling a home and downsizing after a divorce.

Monique is a post-9/11 Army Reserves (2011-2023) veteran referred to America's Warrior Partnership by Wounded Warrior Project, living in North Carolina. Monique has been trying to sell her home so she can downsize to an apartment that is more within her budget, as she and her ex-husband were splitting the mortgage payment until their divorce. Now that the divorce is finalized, Monique cannot afford to pay the mortgage on her own. She has not had any luck in selling the home; however, she is able to rent it out.

When Monique first started working with America’s Warrior Partnership, the biggest challenge we faced in our efforts to get her assistance was that because she owns her current home, she is considered stably housed. That means she does not qualify for some of the housing programs we frequently work with, although we all know the struggles that still happen even as a homeowner.

Monique is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in cybersecurity and is utilizing the GI Bill to do so. Her budget allows a rent of up to $1,700 per month at a new place, though she needs assistance with the deposit and first month’s rent. Thanks to PureTalk and their Deeds Not Words initiative, she was able to receive that assistance.

“Thank you to Pure Talk and AWP for your generous support during this important transition in my life. Because of your assistance with my first month’s rent, security deposit, and additional living support, I am able to move forward with stability.” - Monique, Army veteran

If not for PureTalk, Monique would not be able to maintain an affordable and safe housing situation when she needed it most.

Deeds Not Words is a collaborative initiative between PureTalk and America’s Warrior Partnership, dedicated to providing tangible support to veterans in need. Through PureTalk’s continued commitment, veterans like Monique can access help through the AWP Network when they need it most.
