For many veterans, a reality far tougher than anything experienced on the flight line is homelessness. Despite their skills and determination, the transition to civilian life can bring unexpected hardship for veterans and their families.
Michael served in the US Air Force from March 2003 to March 2021 as an airplane mechanic, working on plane engines. Once he got out of the military, Michael, his wife, and kids faced many struggles and ultimately became homeless. He had taken a job as a mechanic, but they were not paid enough to keep up with bills or rent, and decided to make the move from Washington State to Florida, where his wife was from. Soon after their arrival, Michael accepted a position on Eglin Air Force base, but was unfortunately laid off shortly after because his wife was battling addiction, and they once again found themselves homeless.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
Some of the barriers Michael faced were a lack of stable housing and looking for employers that were hiring at the time. Our program helped Michael stay positive and kept sending him job opportunities, which he enthusiastically applied for. Michael interviewed for many of the positions that were presented to him by our staff, and he ultimately accepted a position with an aviation wing, where he is currently working as a mechanic on C-130s.
He’s been holding his head high, working hard. His wife was able to go into a treatment facility she was referred to by one of our partners. They were able to gain housing assistance from Priority Veteran, who is helping with rent assistance while Michael and his family get back on their feet.
Michael is excited about his career with this company and thankful to our staff for their help and guidance along the way. Michael can now provide for his family, and his wife is in a better place in her life. Michael expressed his appreciation to Panhandle Warrior Partnership for assistance in his time of need.
