Purple Heart Recipient Now Sleeps Soundly Thanks to the AWP Network

Quality sleep has been proven to improve mental and physical health. For many with disabilities, however, a good night’s sleep can be an uphill battle. For Manuel Roman, a 100% service-connected disabled veteran, this was unfortunately the case. This was until Manuel was referred to the AWP Network, which provided the veteran with life-changing support.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.

Manuel is an Army Veteran (’06-’08) and Purple Heart recipient who was wounded in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Manuel has severe sleep apnea connected to his PTSD and uses a CPAP machine to help him sleep. Living in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico, the island is prone to frequent storms and power outages. These outages affect his CPAP machine and often his ability to sleep. After contacting the Warrior Bonfire Program (WBF) with this issue, WBF connected Manuel to the AWP Network for support.

AWP Network Deputy Director Steve Smutak spoke with Manuel to discuss the best course of action to resolve his problem. Manuel requested a solar-powered generator, which he could not afford, to keep his CPAP machine powered during these power outages. Steve reached out to his contacts at the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station (WFFS) to assist. Thankfully, WFFS provided a solar-powered generator delivered to the veteran’s home in Puerto Rico. Thanks to the AWP Network and our partners, Manuel can sleep soundly and get the rest he needs.
