It's oftentimes a challenge enough to find somewhere to live, and though a new apartment offers stability, it lacks the basic comforts that make a house a home. This journey is a powerful reminder of how community, compassion, and connection can transform lives.
Marty Slaughter, an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam era, was referred to Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) by a friend. He recently secured an apartment with his housing voucher, though he had little furniture to fill this new home. He had been sleeping on a futon -causing him back pain - and had no dresser for his clothes.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
AKWP reached out to Eagle River Elks Lodge, who has a storage unit with donated furniture for veterans, to see if they had a bed and dresser for Marty and arrange a time to deliver the items. They were able to provide those items, along with a nightstand and a small TV stand that Marty could use as a coffee table.
Marty is grateful to be able to make his apartment more livable thanks to the help from his community.
