For many, a new home represents a fresh start, but for those living in Navajo Nation that new beginning can be a long time coming.

When Dine Naazbaa Partnership’s Case Coordinator Karen met Martha, a surviving spouse of a veteran, she had been waiting on a new mobile home to be delivered for a while. Her previous home had been a hogan that needed its doors and windows replaced, making it very unsafe for Martha, while also struggling with her health waiting on her new home. Martha’s new home was delivered in December of 2024 and she got the keys in February 2025!

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.

When Karen went to visit Martha in February with a special delivery, dropping off a food box from a recent DNP veterans’ outreach event, she was surprised to learn that Martha had moved into her new two-bedroom mobile home!  However, at the time of Karen’s visit, Martha still needed several household items to make her new home hers, such as towels, wash rags, a bed, bed linens, and an end table.

Karen got to work contacting veteran resources in Showlow, AZ and sent one of their partners Martha’s needs. Karen then drove to Holbrook, AZ to pick up the items that had been donated by a veteran for Martha and took them to her. Martha was so surprised to receive the items for her new home! She additionally received two photos to hang in her living room, though we are still searching for a full-size bed for her.

Martha had a huge smile on her face and was so grateful to the veteran who donated items, to DNP, as well as Karen for doing what she does. Ahe Hee' 'shi yazhi, is what she said in Navajo meaning, “thank you my child.”
