Asking for help is never easy. For many veterans, a simple request for a haircut or a few groceries takes courage to admit you're in need, especially when the needs feel so basic. What began as a modest request opened the door to meaningful support and compassion.
Army veteran (‘70-’72) David* reached out to Alaska Warrior Partnership (AKWP) stating he was just in need of a haircut, that he wanted to feel human again, because it had been a while since he had his hair and beard trimmed.

Ever wondered what $10 could do? It can save the lives of veterans like the one you're reading about in this story. Donate $10 a month and help us reach veterans before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. Our veterans deserve better.
During the intake process with AKWP, he mentioned he did not have the funds for a ride or to pay for the haircut. He also stated that he was on food stamps and that his phone was about to be shut off. Although he was receiving food stamps, the amount he receives a month was so low that he barely had enough for the month and when he did eat, he was rationing his food. At a recent doctor's visit, they learned his nutrition levels were so low that he needed to start supplements to make up for what he couldn't get from food.
AKWP case coordinator Bambi was able to connect him with Life Wireless to get a more affordable cell phone plan. She was also able to locate a barber who is a volunteer for Operation Iron Warrior, a local veteran 501C-3 non-profit. Hunter Mathias volunteered immediately to do the haircut and beard trim; Hunter was very excited to spend time with David, a Vietnam Veteran, and listen to his military stories.
When Hunter reached out to Bambi to confirm the hair appointment, he asked if David needed anything else. Bambi mentioned that he was lacking food. Hunter went above and beyond a simple haircut and went to the grocery store to buy David groceries. Hunter said that David was very appreciative and really enjoyed the company from a fellow veteran.
