Community Integration in Action: Providing Holistic Care in the Panhandle

Makenzie*, a post-9/11 veteran and single mom of a newborn, had been feeling overwhelmed and felt like she needed assistance. During the conversation with Makenzie, Panhandle Warrior Partnership’s (PWP) case coordinator, Kenny Thompson, gathered information to address causes related to her being overwhelmed. Makenzie was connected to local resources by PWP after identifying three immediate issues related to healthcare, benefits, and legal assistance.

She was referred to the Okaloosa County Vet Center for her healthcare request and her local veteran service officer for assistance opening a benefits increase case. PWP also found Makenzie the legal support she needed after being denied by several law firms in the area for her complex case. PWP was able to collaborate with North Florida Legal Services which was able to find a lawyer that took her case and started the legal process. Makenzie was grateful for all of the education about resources available and advocacy to ensure she received the assistance she needed. PWP will continue to support Makenzie, her family and the whole veteran community through proactive engagement and holistic collaborative efforts.
