The Network in Action: Empowering a Single Mother

A Network Advocate received a referral from a national partner for a post 9/11 veteran living in the state of South Carolina. The women veteran served in the Air Force from 2002-2005 and was discharged honorably. She found herself in a financial crisis as a single parent after being unemployed for several months due to COVID-19. Although the veteran received a recent job offer, she had not yet started working and had a disconnection notice for her utilities. The Network immediately assisted the veteran with paying for her utility bill through the help of a national partner to avoid her utilities being disconnected and putting her family in a place without basic water and central heating and air. The national partner paid the veteran’s past due balance as well as her current balance within 24 hours.

Follow-up is being conducted by a Network Advocate for a warm hand off to a local community-based program that can continuously engage and holistically support the veteran. The veteran will start work soon without the worry of paying her past due utility bill or having her utilities shut off.
