Closing Existing Gaps by Fostering Relationships with Veterans in the Community

To effectively address the needs of a community, there's no substitute for genuine connections and fostering relationships to identify and bridge the existing gaps. Often, Permian Warrior Partnership (PWP) seeks resources for a veteran, but when a resource seeks us out, we are prepared to provide for our veteran community.

Recently, a contact at Christmas In Action (CIA), a nonprofit that repairs homes of low-income elderly and/or disabled homeowners, reached out to the PWP team seeking any veterans who could benefit from their house being painted in preparation for the winter. Knowing many veterans in the community, Case Coordinator Breanna Durner already had someone in mind. Daniel Hargitay* is a Navy veteran (’72-’75) with various health issues who is unable to do any strenuous work on his home. She provided CIA with Daniel’s contact, and he was chosen for this opportunity.

The organization contacted Daniel, who was pleasantly surprised by the proposal. Soon after, individuals from the local Home Depot arrived to power wash and prep Daniel’s house to be painted. Daniel and his wife chose the color that they would be painting, and the team immediately got to work on caulking and painting his home. When the project was completed, the team presented Daniel with an American flag and thanked him for his service. A few days later, Daniel called Breanna to ask if she had anything to do with this, and she admitted to nominating Daniel for this opportunity. Daniel and his wife were incredibly grateful and gave a heartfelt thank you to Breanna for keeping them in mind.
